The Works of Peter Neilson

Sofitel Melbourne On Collins proudly presented a selection of works by Melbourne-born artist Peter Neilson, represented by Australian Galleries. Recognised for his immersive and often haunting visual language, Neilson created expansive paintings that merged overlapping realities and evoked the mood of cinematic film noir, revealing urban stories marked by tension and ambiguity.

Neilson was widely regarded as a leading figurative painter and draughtsman whose practice delved into shifting viewpoints and atmospheric cityscapes. Trained at RMIT University, he exhibited extensively across Australia and abroad, including in London and Salzburg.

His work demonstrated a sustained commitment to narrative, structure, and layered meaning. Drawing on the aesthetics of theatre and cinema, he constructed images that balanced precision with emotional charge.

 
Through subtle shifts in tone, detail, and composition, his paintings invited viewers to consider the fragility of perception and the blurred boundaries between memory, place and imagined realities.
