Sofitel Melbourne On Collins was proud to present the extraordinary work of Gerard O’Connor and Marc Wasiak. Renowned for their meticulously crafted photographic tableaux, the duo blended historical research with contemporary perspectives.
With magic-realist elements, their works reimagined and critiqued periods, subjects, and sites, offering a truly captivating visual experience.
Photographer and filmmaker Gerard, alongside wardrobe and set stylist Marc, expertly created large-scale, narrative tableaux that blended performance, costume, and lighting to tell compelling stories. Drawing from Western artistic traditions, their work critiqued societal and cultural norms, often using humour with darker undertones to provoke thought and reflection.
The work’s complexity was built from the ground up, involving multiple performers, props, and layered concepts that explored both the absurd and the profound in human experience. By revealing the interplay between the past and present, their work engaged viewers with themes of power and moral dilemmas. Guests explored Gerard and Marc’s striking artistry at Sofi’s Lounge, where history met modern reflection.
Following successful exhibitions at Sofitel Brisbane and Sofitel Gold Coast, this Melbourne showing marked the third city to host their powerful work—inviting viewers to explore the hidden layers of society, history, and truth beneath the surface.
