As a Hotel for the Arts, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is proud to present the works of Melbourne-based artist Graham Fransella who explores the tension between instinct and intention. Through expressive prints and elemental paintings, his figures and forms emerge in bold, abstract gestures—revealing a raw, poetic honesty shaped by decades of refinement.
From 2 June 2025 | Sofi’s Lounge, Level 1
Fransella is a celebrated abstract painter and printmaker whose expressive mark-making explores the human form with instinct and intensity. Trained in the UK and based in Australia since 1975, his work has been exhibited widely, held in major national collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, Parliament House Canberra, Artbank, and he has been an Archibald Prize finalist.
His recent work embraces abstraction and spontaneity, valuing imperfection as a source of authentic expression. Inspired by Edvard Munch, Fransella’s prints and paintings balance energy with control, creating powerful images shaped by both experience and instinct. Embracing chance and movement, his intuitive process reflects decades of experimentation and a deep trust in the act of making.
